The ski season in Queenstown runs from the end of June until early October, although the timing of when ski resorts open depends entirely on snow conditions. Peak season is typically between July and August, which is when the ski resorts are the busiest, the weather is the coolest, and the mountains have the most snow. July and August are also when the snow on the mountains is in the best condition for skiing and snowboarding.

Queenstown winter ranges from cool to cold. The winter months are from June to August, and the average temperatures range from two to eight degrees, with the occasional snowfall. Queenstown’s proximity to Lake Wakatipu moderates the cold weather, although it’s not uncommon for the temperature to fall below freezing. Being one of the more mild ski destinations in New Zealand, Queenstown is the ideal place to go if you prefer more mild temperatures but great skiing conditions.

If you’re considering going to Queenstown during the winter months and want to make the best of your stay, any time between June and August is a great time to visit.
